A Spiritual Cinema Mystery
By Chris Cade on Oct 27, 2009 in Spiritual Movies

A few years back, I went through a phase where I watched a lot of movies all the time. There was something delightful about immersing myself in a new world for a little while, whether it was to let go of the stresses of the day, or to feel a surge of adrenaline from watching a favorite action movie.
As my spiritual path has unfolded, I’ve found that I tended to watch fewer movies, and that the kinds of movies I found that I enjoyed changed dramatically. Whereas the average rating used to be R, it’s now somewhere between PG and PG-13. Not to say R-rated movies are “bad”, but rather, I’ve found that now I resonate less and less with the violence, graphic sex, heavy profanity, and gore, that seem to command the many R rated movies these days.
Now with that in mind, I have found myself once again been feeling drawn to watch more movies… and it feels a bit different. Whereas before I was looking to immerse myself in a new world to escape my present one, now I seek to immerse myself in new wisdom. My love of spiritual stories has transferred itself to a love of spiritual cinema.
Along those lines, for the first time tonight I watched a movie and actually took notes while watching it. At first I was concerned I might miss out on enjoying the movie if I was busy writing about it; however, I quickly learned that wasn’t the case for a couple of reasons:
- I was being mindful of what messages were being conveyed in the movie
- I only wrote down notes when I really felt something caught my attention
What was most interesting about this experience is that rather than enjoy the movie less, I found I enjoyed it much more… perhaps because I was forced to really be present both with myself and the movie at the same time, rather than immersing myself in the movie and forgetting about my own existence for a while.
With that in mind, I’m going to try an interesting experiment. The next bulleted list will contain all of the insights I gleaned from watching this movie tonight. The question I have for you is… which movie was I watching?
(Hint: My choice of language may give some clues… or on the other hand, it might completely derail you!)
- There’s an air of mystery, and a sense of being ‘called’ forth
- The lines between dream and reality are blurred. Time elapses at a different rate than it is perceived at.
- To be a part of any “world,” we must “eat the food” of that world, so to speak
- The things that matter most arise from the completion of hard work
- We have karmic relationships that transcend our Earthly experiences. Perhaps we even have a “Cosmic Family”
- When we have our reflections mirrored back at us, we’re given the opportunity to grow
- Anybody who asks to be of service, must be allowed to serve
- If you forget your true self, you will become lost in another world
- Right action produces abundance for all. Wrong action leads to death.
- Lavishing one’s self is often a means for avoiding feelings of rejection and loneliness
- The context of our situation determines what the Truth is
- Compassion is the key to… just about everything
- Love is our protector and our salvation
- Staying true and steadfast to our gut feelings brings about optimal outcomes
So I ask again… which movie did I watch tonight?
