“There isn’t a single human being who hasn’t plenty to cry over, and the trick is to make the laughs outweigh the tears.” — Dorothy Dix
Feature Film: Uncross the Stars
This months Spiritual cinema Circle feature film, Uncross the Stars, is a make-you-laugh-make-you-cry comedic drama with a terrific cast — Oscar®-nominated and Emmy®-winning actress Barbara Hershey, Golden Globe® winner Ron Perlman and newcomer Daniel Gillies. The story centers on a young widower Troy (Gillies) who is emotionally shutdown when he arrives in desert retirement community to visit his Aunt Hilda (Hershey). Troy learns about love and loss, and discovers how to laugh again as he spends time with Aunt Hilda, her friends — a fun-loving group of older women — and her neighbor Bobby (Perlman).
When Troy (Daniel Gillies) loses his beautiful young wife, he follows her enigmatic last request: to drive to the desert and build his Aunt Hilda a porch, and to “uncross the stars.” Once he arrives in Happy Valley, an Arizona retirement community, Troy meets Hilda’s friends, a group of bawdy, wisecracking older women, and a Vietnam vet (Perlman) who show him a different outlook on life and death. Troy’s journey opens his heart in ways he never imagined possible.
Short Film: The Journal
Having spent most of his life feeling alone, as a result of losing his mother at an early age, Alex discovers a journal she has left behind for him. Will he be able to accept the gift she has given him?
Short Film: Mr. Jimmy’s Birthday Challenge
To celebrate his 80th birthday, Mississippi native Jimmy Moore attempts to run, walk, or bike 80 kilometers — one for each year of his life — in a single day. When word of his plan gets out, the whole community decides to take Mr. Jimmy’s challenge and see if they can “go” their age. The former railroad worker, who “always sets his finish line over the horizon” inspires us to live life to the fullest.
Short Film: Red Wednesday
A young Iranian-American girl hopes to rejuvenate her ailing mother with memories of the homeland. Nine-year-old Sholeh works hard to recreate a Zoroastrian fire celebration — to take away sickness and misfortune, and provide health and happiness in the New Year.
