Spiritual Movie Review: Dinotopia Miniseries
By Chris Cade on Mar 25, 2010 in Spiritual Movies

Many many months ago, my friend Christopher Westra sent out his usual weekly update letter to his friends and family and mentioned that they had watched the miniseries “Dinotopia” and that it was surprisingly spiritual in nature.
I took note of that, but it wasn’t until recently (about a month ago) that I finally decided to have Netflix send it to me. Then once it was here, it just kept sitting on the shelf waiting to be watched. It was like this little orphaned unwanted movie. I don’t know why I didn’t want to watch it, except that some part of me just felt like, “Eh, whatever. It’s like about dinosaurs and stuff.”
I think I just didn’t think it would be interesting.
Anyway, a couple of nights ago I finally just sat down and watched it and… WOW… I really enjoyed it a lot.
It is definitely a very deeply spiritual movie on many levels, enough that I couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface of it.
The short synopsis is that two brothers in an airplane crash into the ocean, their father dies, and the two have to survive in a new land that nobody has ever heard of: “Dinotopia.” It’s a place where dinosaurs and humans co-exist. Not just normal humans… highly evolved humans.
So when these two brothers arrive, it’s almost like a clash of two worlds more fierce than if a tyrannosaurus rex were to invite itself over for dinner. Not only that, but Dinotopia also has some “resource depletion” issues (not unlike our world today).
The path to resolving these conflicts lies in the simplicity of Dinotopia – in living a more humane, compassionate life. Dinotopia is a movie about the bridging of “two” worlds (actually many metaphorical worlds, but usually two polar opposites at a time) and in learning how to live one’s truth, not just preach it.
Here’s a few quotes I really liked from the movie, and if you find any wisdom in them at all, I recommend you watch the movie.
“Weapons are enemies, even to their owners.”
“One raindrop raises the ocean.”
“How can you want anything other than your destiny?”
“Breathe deep. Fly high.”
There’s actually tons of other great quotes… those are just the few I manged to jot down when I caught them. One of the really nice things about this movie is that it’s something kids and adults can both enjoy, and all generations can learn the wisdom from this movie.
I’m grateful to share Dinotopia with you now, and I look forward to sharing it with my son Quantum when he is older.
