Has there ever been a time where you've wanted to do something, but were afraid to do it?
Failure can be painful. And we often go out of our way to avoid that pain.
But sometimes, that's the absolute worst thing we can do!
In 2009, I left my job and set out to start my own business. I had stocked away a some savings, and I was ready to go.
Only, there was one BIG problem…
I couldn't afford the mortgage on my condo anymore.
It was also two states away from where I then lived. It seemed like a lifetime since I had lived in the condo and moved for a "better way of life."
And now I didn't have the full time income that my corporate job had afforded me.
Without burning through my savings (and cutting short the time I had to get my business off the ground), I couldn't cover the monthly cost.
To make the pain even worse, my only option to leave the house was foreclosure…
I had tried selling the house. But it was in the middle of the housing crisis and no one wanted to buy. I had tried renting it out. And that only worked briefly until the renters left and nobody else would rent it at fair (even below fair) value.
I felt like I was out of options and probably about to be out of money too. It seemed like just when I was committed to following my dreams the Universe was conspiring against me.
The voice of self-criticism in my head pounded at me.
"How can you be such a failure. I thought you were a responsible person. You can't even keep your own house."
"If you lose your house, other people will see you as 'unsuccessful.' They'll think you're 'not good enough.'"
Little did I realize the Universe was conspiring FOR my favor. Not against me.
I didn't realize that until I was faced with a very difficult decision:
Either I kept the house and sabotaged my efforts to start my business…
Or I gave up my "ideal" picture of being "successful" and walked away from the home.
Through that entire experience, I finally recognized that my desire to avoid the pain of failure was causing me to make poor decisions. I saw that if I wanted a to truly create a new life for myself, I had to face my fear head on.
So I let the house go.
And along with it, the ideas of what "success" looked like. Instead I was determined to find a path to TRUE success – starting from the inside.
What about you? Have you ever noticed this human tendency to want to avoid the pain of failure?
